CD Cover Design

Tech Choices
CD Cover Design created for a Coffeetime Project. Now, back by popular request. With an updated Spotify playlist of 45 coffee related sounds. The CD cover is Low-Res webcam photography. The artwork images are tiny. I created the checkerboard design on the front because the photos couldn’t get much bigger without becoming entirely pixelated. There was something satisfying about working within the limitations of digital art.
Artwork Choices
The low-res quality of the image had personal appeal. Being blind in one eye, I connected. Tech was able to express my view of the world. The portrait of myself captures my visual field. With the dominant eye visible while the other not. The portrait photography mirrors from a prior painting with the same composition.
Pour Myself a Cup of Ambition
Created while at design school – engaging my future as a visual artist – with one eye.
Package Design – CD Cover
Pour yourself a Cup of Ambition
The coffee inspired CD release. First created in 2001 with coffee related songs. I designed the CD cover and arranged the music – each CD came with a small bag of coffee (enough to make one pot).
Fast Forward to 2015 – and Pour yourself a cup of ambition is now a Spotify playlist. Brew some coffee and enjoy.

CD Cover Design – Brave Hands

The most talent Deborah Lutz is always a pleasure.
The Brave Hands CD cover began by creating interesting double exposures of hands. I finished the design in Photoshop with a collection of my texture photos (available at garycrossey.photography).

CD Cover Design for Asheville Cookie La Rue
CD Cover Design. Sure it has been awhile since anyone has requested a CD cover . But, back in the day, CD’s artwork requests were quite popular. At that time, everyone wanted a CD, everyone had a CD, some people even wear CD’s as clothing accessories.
While the CD cover never did reach the same artistic heights as the LP cover. The CD was the last step before switching our media to an online format. Where every song, book, or show feels the same in your hand. Same weight, same shape, same.
When Asheville recording star Cookie La Rue hit me up again for more free design services. At first, I said “NO”. I actually kept repeating “no, no, no…” and there it is I ended up with this creation.
Granted at the time, most everyone had already stopped using CD’s. Most people had even stopped using Napster. But, Cookie wanted the CD format. And that is what she got!

The CD cover design of Folkin’ with you was the Blue Prior of Cookie La Rue recordings. Keeping with the theme, I drew my inspiration from Joni Mitchell – Blue LP design.
I began the CD Cover Project as I do with many projects. I began with my camera. Shooting photos of Cookie La Rue was not pleasant. There was a huge amount of Photoshop skills need to blur out most of Cookie face – I then created the CD cover following the tone and layout as Blue LP did.
To my complete surprise – the CD release party was hughly popular. The CD went on to 2nd and 3rd reprint.

DJ iGUY: F**K off & Dance Winter ICE mix
The 3D character was borrowed from another project. The figure is part of an animated piece. The model was created in Poser and Adobe Photoshop. I draw the textures for the 3D model in Adobe Photoshop, then slowly layered them onto the model. The figure represents the hands of time, and are swinging like the pendulum of an old grandfather clock.

I shot the photography a number of years ago while visiting Belfast. With Adobe Photoshop it is easy enough to convert a 300 year old stain-glass window to something more modern.

An essential function of graphic design is to convey information. As with music, design sets a mood and creates connections. Graphic Design tells the viewer how to respond to the entire message embodied in the graphics.
For Unilever – they wanted their international managers to feel appreciated during the ACCA 2002 World Conference.
We proposed the design solution to embody the product line.

The fundamental concept for the Fruit Bytes Package Design prototype was to help the end user organize their digital media by color sorting. Each color represented a fruit of the same color.

GRAPHIC DESIGN: Organize with Colors
- Red – Strawberry.
- Yellow – Lemon.
- Orange – Orange.
- Green – Cucumber.
During testing end users reported that they enjoyed the bright cheerful graphics. The overall impression was that most computer related accessories were dull and uninspiring.
The Fruit Bytes product line proved to be user friendly (and likes) as the discs that was easy to find, visual to organize, and something the the user could keep track of without losing.
